Odin Coöperatieve Supermark is an chain of 24 cooperative supermarkets spread across the Netherlands.

Since its foundation in 1983, Odin has been buying directly from organic and biodynamic farmers[1], horticulturists, bakers, butchers, winemakers, pasta makers, chocolatiers, etc, and selling it with transparency to its customers as well as its cooperative members. It also produces its own vegetables in its own biodynamic farm De Beersche Hoeve.

Here are a few, betweeen many, efforts from Odin to reach a high level of sustainability:

  • All fruits, vegetables and garden waste from its stores is transported separately and converted into compost. The organic waste from its distribution center in Geldermalsen is fermented for energy production and for compost.
  • Receipts are only printed if resquested by the customer.
  • Odin offers Low Waste wrappings in store, such as bamboo beakers and bee wax wraps.
  • The floors of the stores are scrubbed with machines that work on cold water and without soap.
  • The lights in each spaces of the store automatically turn out when unoccupied.
  • Odin provides education to the public and farmers on the preservation of bees through Odin's bee colonies.

The +'s

  • With more than 20 stores in the Netherlands (5 in Amsterdam), you may swap your conventional supermarket for Odin quite easily: one may be in your neighborhood.
  • Odin offers a large range of products which allows you to do all your grocery shopping at a single location.
  • By being a co-owner[2] of the cooperative you will pay less at the cash register (around 20%).
  • You can also order weekly vegetable baskets for a fairly low price.[3]

The -'s

  • Odin imports many organic products from all across Europe and sells many vegetables and fruits coming, for instance, from Spain, Italy or France (heavy carbon footprint)
  • Odin does not follow the seasons and sells, for instance, avocados, mangoes and strawberries in the winter (produced in greenhouses, requiring a lot of energy).
  • Many of Odin's products cannot be traced well[4].
